Final meeting

School Council met today for an end of year party!
We celebrated our achievements in school, mainly in improving safety on the road outside, and making lunchtimes calmer and more enjoyable for everyone. Looking beyond the school, we have helped make life easier for others through our contributions to charities such as Macmillan Cancer Care, Children in Need and Comic Relief.
We discussed how our work has involved us in living our school values of love, respect, perseverance responsibility and hope.
Everyone agreed that being on the school council has been very special. We know we have helped others and made a difference. We feel proud of our work.
School Council presented Mrs Rees with a thank you letter which was much appreciated.

Thank you school council for your positivity and good work.

Everyone volunteered to be guides! We chose two pairs; Lois and Harrison, and Shelby and Freya.
We thought about what a new person would need to know during their tours; school values, daily timetable, clubs and activities, collective worship and celebration assemblies, our grounds and how we keep safe.

Then we discussed the questions we would like to ask and chose the following five.........
What teaching experience have you had, and how do you make learning exciting?
We have five school values. What values are most important to you?
How would you show love for your students?
How would you manage inappropriate behaviour?
What do you know about our school and how would you make it even better?

Shelby and Lloyd;  We like HOPE. It helps you think about the future.
Hudson; The values give you something to focus on.
Harrison; If you know the values you are more likely to do them.
ChuYan; They help to keep you positive.
Charlotte; The banners will be big! They will make us think, 'How can I be good and kind today?'
Mia; The banners will help teachers remind children how to behave.
Hudson; The tokens make you want to be good! I really want to earn tokens!

The following incidents of dangerous driving have been witnessed;
  • parking on the yellow lines and zigzags
  • parking on the roundabout, on grass verges, pavements and across drives
  • Speeding
  • drivers trying to push past each other
Lois reminded everyone that we have made posters before but after a short time of improvement the problems have returned.
We discussed what we can do. We would like to make a bigger poster which could be laminated to protect it. A copy could be put into the newsletter to show how worried we really are.
We collected ideas for our poster and our digital experts started the poster.

Y4 Girls have complained that one toilet does not have a seat at present. With only two toilets for three classes this is a bit of a problem. We will notify the office.
Y3 are requesting to join the school choir. They feel that as they are KS2 they should be included.
Mrs. Rees will pass the request on to Mrs.Newlin.
Y1 would like teachers to remind children in all classes that the astro is for football.

British values display

Shelby and Lloyd have taken class copies of the lunchtime charter into all classrooms. The Big version is now on display in the hall (Good work everyone!)
School council agreed the lunchtime Charter is having an impact. Mia noted that she had seen lots of people looking at it as they queued for lunches.
School Council still feel there is a problem with lunchtime behaviour and several classes have put on their boards that they would like more equipment to play with at play times. Lois suggested that the money we raise at Enterprise week could go on improving the stock of playtime activities.

British Values.
Mrs Rees brought our attention to the values display in the reception area. We agreed these values are important to us at school and discussed how we show our commitment to these values at Blandford St Mary.
Democracy; Our elected school council provides a platform for children's opinions being heard and taken into consideration in decisions on the management of our school.
Rule of law. We understand the importance of rules, of rights and responsibilities and recognise the importance of devising School and class charters.
Individual Liberty At our school we have choices; we can choose after school clubs and sometimes which challenge to accept in our learning.
Mutual respect. Everyone is respected at our school. We make sure we speak and listen respectfully accepting that other people have their own views and opinions.
Acceptance of different Faiths and Beliefs. We enjoy learning about other Faiths and cultures in our country and around the world.
