Agenda.

Welcome booklet.

Firstly Jack and Ben were congratulated for their very prompt work in designing a front cover for our booklet and getting it back to Mrs. Rees on the very day we last met!

Seb and Ellen brought the list of staff, and Quinn and Phoebe brought a list of the clubs we offer.

The quotes are still being collected and the plan of the school needs to be finished.

We decided that the booklet will need illustrations and felt children would like to see drawings of children enjoying playtime activities.

Action

We agreed everyone would draw one activity to include in the booklet.

All contributions need to be with Mrs. Rees by golden time this week.

Lunchtimes.

School Council agreed there is still room for improvement in lunchtime behaviour. The following were suggested;

• More reminders in assembly to stop when the bell rings, wait until your class number is held up then WALK to your line.

• Maybe we will need two lots of cards for children now playing in the peaceful patch.

• A big temporary sign ‘This is a walking area’

• A reminder that it is everyone’s responsibility to check the rotas. You only use the play areas or equipment when it is your TURN!

Action.

Mrs. Rees will feedback ideas to Mr Lavis.

No matters arising.

Chair Holleigh closed the meeting and thanked everyone for coming.

Network feedback

Holleigh fed back about the School Council Network meeting. All schools had shared their charters. We then identified which parts would be appropriate for a Blandford Community Charter.

We have had several new children to the school recently and Mr Lavis is keen to be able to give newcomers an introduction to the school telling them everything they will need to know from a child’s perspective.

We discussed what we thought should be included.

• A plan of the school

• School times and timetable

• Staff names and pictures

• School charter and prayer

• Children’s thoughts about lessons and what makes our school special

• Highlights; Leeson house, Little Canada. Year 5 camp, the Sea side trip

• Clubs

Action.

Jack volunteered to design a front cover.

Holleigh and Jacques are to work on the plan of the school.

Ben, Emma, Kaylee and Oliver are going to collect children’s views on our school and lessons.

Seb and Ellen will list staff, and Quinn and Phoebe will ask Mrs. Burge for a list of clubs.

[Started by the display of work at the lantern festival] The next meeting will involve our RR representatives sharing our school Charter with the Mayor of Blandford.
School Charter.
Although we have excellent classroom and playground charters we felt a whole school charter would be useful to highlight what we feel is really important for our school and its future.
Everyone contributed words and phrases that we felt should be included; Respect, love, kindness, consideration, listening to others, making a contribution, feeling happy, being safe, celebrating success , supporting each other.
Oliver felt it very important we should end with ‘To be the best that we can be’ and everyone agreed.
We discussed which of these ideas reflected Christian values and thought they all did, but we selected three we felt were most important for our School Charter; love, respect and forgiveness.

Action
Mrs. Rees is going to put the ideas together for School, council approval next meeting.
Governor involvement
We would like to have a governor to come to our meetings to hear our ideas.
Action
Holleigh and Emma will make a short video for Mr Lavis to present to Governors to explain what we do and ask for a volunteer to join us.
Matters arising
Holleiugh asked each classes representatives but there were no issues being raised. Maybe it’s too early in the term!

Candidate’s visits

Back packs update

Mrs Rees showed an example back pack that she had made up in the half term. We discussed how we could achieve the best results for this very important appeal.

Action

Holleigh and Jacques will write a letter to some of the shops in Blandford to explain about the appeal and invite them to donate items that we could include in our back packs.

Kaylee and Oliver, and Emma and Ben are going to prepare two large posters to display inside and outside school to remind everyone about the appeal.

Agenda

Open Day

School council have been asked to act as guides for the open morning at school tomorrow. We decided to work in pairs with an older child accompanying a younger one. We discussed the route that should be taken, and the things that new parents and children would like to know. We discussed the importance of being welcoming, friendly and positive.

This year’s charities.

Our school has been approached by The Blandford School to see if we would be interested in supporting them with a charitable project. The idea is to provide and fill back packs with everything a primary school child would need for school. These would then be collected and transported to places like Malawi and Liberia to help the poorest children gain an education.

As a Rights Respecting school we are very aware that all children have a right to primary education UNCRC Article 28 and that it is our responsibility as a wealthy country to help poorer countries achieve this.

Holleigh held a vote for backpacks or shoe boxes for this year

Any other business.

• Jack felt that although we have bins outside there is still some litter around.

Chair Holleigh suggested that children should be reminded at assembly and through signs that they have a responsibility to keep the school tidy. Only if the problem persists should we go down the litter picker route.

• As no one had been asked to bring any issues to the council we wondered if perhaps we needed a poster in each class for anyone to write requests on.

Jack and Holleigh agreed to produce these and send them around to classes.

Chair Holleigh closed the meeting and thanked everyone for coming.

School Council minutes 14.9.10

The New School Council introduced themselves.

The Council now comprises Mikaila Keenleyside and Jack Hargrave [Yr 6] Holleigh Bainbridge and Jacques Thornwill [Yr5] Ben Willson and Emma Wright [Yr4] Kaylee Lake and Oliver Hargrave [Yr 3] Sebastian Flavell and Ellen Spicer [Yr 2] Quinn Peters and Phoebe [Yr 1]

Agenda

What is a school council?

Everyone put forward their ideas about what our School Council should be and what services we should provide. We decided on the following aims;

• To listen to the ideas and views of our classmates

• To bring ideas to School council for discussion

• To take our best ideas forward and act as a link between children and management of the school.

• To represent the children of our school when decisions are being made that affect us all.

• To think of ways we can improve our school.

• To help anyone who is sad.

• To help develop the Rights Respecting ideas throughout the school

• To solve problems

• To welcome visitors and show them around our school

How will children know about us?

We decided we would need some publicity to encourage children to use their school council. This is what we plan to do;

• Introduce ourselves in assembly

• Create an attractive notice board

• Put school council notices in each class displaying our photographs and including a space for children to write any issues they would like school council to discuss.

Election of Chairperson

The Role of Chairperson was outlined and three children were shortlisted for the position. After a fair and very close vote Holleigh was elected.

Congratulations Holleigh!

She will be chairing the next meeting on 28.9.10

Thanks everyone.
